The end-to-end platform for environmental acoustic monitoring.

The work
Acoustic marine monitoring campaigns require being at sea. We worked to change that. BOA is Nauta Scientific's complete platform for managing the entire lifecycle of an acoustic campaign: autonomous hardware stations, real-time cloud processing and a scientific dashboard.

Remote listening

Nauta Scientific is one of Italy's leading operators in scientific instrumentation for environmental monitoring. It works where data is evidence, not opinion: research, impact assessments, regulatory compliance. It has been working in bioacoustics for decades, at sea and on land.

BOA was born from a concrete need: to build a complete platform capable of supporting the entire lifecycle of an acoustic campaign, regardless of environment. Underwater to measure anthropogenic noise as required by the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive. On land to survey bats in environmental impact studies.

In both cases, the same problem: recording sounds in remote locations, for long periods, and turning them into usable scientific data. Today BOA is an open service. Anyone who needs acoustic monitoring can contact Nauta to request the service or join active campaigns.

Data ready, instantly

When a station uploads data, the system gets straight to work. A cascade of cloud processing automatically calculates reference scientific metrics, with no overnight batches, no manual intervention. Data arrives from the field and within seconds it is already in the dashboard, readable by scientists and clients while the campaign is still running.

The dashboard lets you explore recordings, visualise acoustic patterns, listen to audio files and download data for further analysis. The interface is designed for those who use the data, not for those who produce it: a scientist or environmental technician can access results without understanding anything about the infrastructure that generated them.

More campaigns in parallel, more stations, more operators: the system scales on its own without requiring new infrastructure. The metrics produced are aligned to reference standards by design, ready to be used in a compliance report or a scientific publication without further processing. Between campaigns, the system is there, silent, ready to start again.

Designed to last

The stations are designed to operate autonomously for weeks, at sea or on land, without physical intervention. Ultra-low power consumption, remotely configurable recording, uploads with automatic retries on unstable connections. If the line drops, the station resumes from where it stopped without losing anything.

When firmware needs updating, an OTA update delivers the new version to the field without retrieving the device. A station deployed today can evolve tomorrow, adapt to a new campaign, change recording parameters — all remotely.

The edge doesn't need to be intelligent, it needs to be reliable. Scientific computation happens elsewhere.
